About Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Tiger Nest Monastery, also known as Paro Taktsang, is a highly worshipped Himalayan Buddhist sacred site on the cliffside of Upper Paro Valley in Bhutan.

The temple's complex was first built in 1692. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava meditated here for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours in the 8th century.

They believed that Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan, flew here on the back of the Tigress and defected the demon who abounded and harmed people.

The temple is dedicated to Padmasambhava, and the elegant structure was built around the cave where he had medicated. It is one of the cultural icons of Bhutan.

Every year, from March to April, the Tsechu festival is celebrated in honor of Padmasambhava in the Paro Valley.

The Monastery is located about 10 kilometers north of Paro Valley and is perched majestically on the cliff at 3,120m, about 900 m above the Paro Valley. The monastery buildings are built on the rock face of a steep slope.

Due to its location, hiking is the only way to reach the Monastery. A hike to Tiger’s Nest is considered a Bhutan short trekking tour.

No road connection drives up towards the Monastery. It takes around one and a half hours to get to the Monastery.

Those who cannot walk the entire way can take a ponyback ride. One can witness the magnificent Himalayas, lush forest, and spectacular Paro valley from the monastery.
