Tiger nest monastery, also known as Paro Taktsang, is one of highly venerated Himalayan Buddhist sacred site; located in the Cliffside of Upper Paro valley in Bhutan.
The temple complex was first built in 1692. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava meditated here for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours in 8th century. The believed that Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan, flew here on the back of Tigress and defected the demon who abounded and harmed people.
The temple is dedicated to Padmasambhava and the elegant structure was built around the cave where he had medicated. It is one of cultural icon of Bhutan. Every year during March or April, Tsechu festival is celebrated on the honor of Padmasambhava in the Paro valley.
The Monastery is suitable about 10 kilometer north of Paro valley and is perched majestically on the cliff at 3,120m, about 900m above the Paro valley. The monastery buildings are built on the rock face of steep slope.
Due to its location, the only way to reach the monastery is by hiking. There are no road connection that drives us up to the monastery. It takes around 1 and half hour to reach the monastery. For those who cannot walk the entire way can take a pony back ride. From the monastery, one can witness the magnificent Himalayas, lush forest and spectacular Paro valley.
3 nights 4 days Bhutan Tour is possible to conduct throughout the year; but the October – December are considered as the best time to visit Bhutan when the sky is clear and so are the views.
Day01: Arrival at Paro International Airport and drive to the capital city, Thimpu. Altitude -2,320m/7,656ft) (Time – 1 hour 30 minutes)
The flight way to Bhutan offers the magical view of high snowy mountains and verdant vegetation. You can also witness the Mt. Everest (8,848m, 29,198ft) and other mountain peaks (subject to clear weather). After custom clearance and immigration formalities, you will be received by our airport representative. He will greet you and drive to your hotel at Thimpu.
After short refreshment, we procced for the visit to popular highlights of Thimpu.
Kuenselcholing View Point: It is the place where one can witness the magnificent view of Thimpu valley. We can reach the view with a short drive from the town. Here you will pay homage to the lord Buddhat and then walk around to take the glimpse of the valley.
Memorial Chorten: Established in 1974, this memorial chorten was built in the memory of legendary Third King of the country, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. He is regarded as the father of modern Bhutan.
Tashichho Dzong: Tashichho Dzong literally means the Fortress of Glorious Region. It is major center of King and monks and houses secretariat building and the throne room. The Dzong was built in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.
Overnight in Thimpu
Day02: Drive from Thimpu – Paro
After breakfast, we drive back to Paro valley. Here we procced to visit the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, farm house and National Museum.
Tiger’s Next Monastery: Early morning, we drive to the hiking point and start our hike to Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s nest). It is the valuable heritable of Bhutan located at around 900m up a seemingly sheer cliff. The monastery building was destroyed by fire in April 1998 but now it has been restored to its former glory. It takes about five hours hike to and from, along some gentle and some steep climb, some stony good path and some good ones. It costs extra USD 25 per person if you wish to take a horse ride.
Farmhouse: We also visit the farmhouse where we eat, take bath and sleep overnight. Here we can witness the brightly embellished exteriors which gives us different variation. If you take hot stone bath and eat in the farmhouse, it will cost you extra USD25 per person.
We also stroll around the Paro valley to encounter local way of living.
Day03: Final Departure
Today we bid farewell to this tiny Himalayan Kingdom. The representative from Dream Bhutan will drive you to the Paro International Airport on scheduled time for your final departure.
